"There is major buzz about Davina
Pardo's documentary Yesterday in Rwanda."

"Programme Four: I.D. includes
Yesterday in Rwanda, a powerful documentary about
Claire Wihogora, a young woman who emigrated to Toronto
in 1998 after barely escaping the Rwandan genocide. As
she tells her story -- including the murder of her father
-- director Davina Pardo cuts between straightforward
footage of her bearing witness to the tragedy and beautifully-shot,
impressionistic images of Toronto and Rwanda. Through
the details of her testimony and the unassuming yet strongly
poetic images, the two collaborators expertly evoke a
sense of her displacement by contrasting the enormous
differences between her past and present homes and the
permanence of trauma on the psyche."

"This is probably the strongest
of the Short Cuts Canada programs, featuring films with
a distinct political slant... Yesterday in Rwanda,
a concise documentary by the very talented Davina Pardo,
traces the aftermath of overseas genocide as it lingers
in downtown Toronto."
